Antioxidants - What Are They? And Where To Find Them

Antioxidants are vital to your health as your body uses them to make you healthy. If you don't eat a balanced diet or don't like certain textures, you may not get enough antioxidants in your diet.

What Are Antioxidants?

Our bodies product what are called free radicals. Free radicals are molecules born through a chemical process triggered by digesting food and the environment (like pollution or tobacco smoke). Free radicals damage cells and cause oxidative stress. Oxidative stress is linked to many chronic health conditions such as heart disese.

Antixoidants are compounds found in plant based foods and spices. They can help prevent or slow down cell damage caused by free radicals keeping you healthy.

Benefits of Antioxidants

You have most likely heard of many types of Antioxidants. Among them are:

  • Vitamin E
  • Vitamin C
  • Vitamin A
  • Beta Carotene
  • Lycopene
  • Magnesium

These are only a few of the many antioxidants found in fruits, veggies and spices. Antioxidants act as scavengers to hunt down free radicals which help prevent conditions like:

Cancer
Heart Disease
Macular Degeneration (in older adults)
Cataracts (older adults)

Each antioxidants has a different function. This is why it's necessary to have a varied diet across all seasons of the year.
